Air sampling smoke detectors consist of a base with a detector module and an associated pipe system. This system is usually installed under the ceiling of the area to be monitored and has defined openings at every point where a point-type smoke detector would otherwise be installed. A fan in the base unit generates the negative pressure required to continuously draw in air samples from the monitored area. The air is channelled to a sensitive optical detector, which examines the sample for the smallest smoke particles. The smoke detector benefits from the collection effect: smoke gases are distributed throughout the room in the early stages of fire development. Each individual air sampling opening must fulfil at least the same fire detection requirements as conventional point-type smoke detectors – and the smoke density increases with each additional air sampling opening.
Integrated air flow sensors constantly check the pipe system for possible blockages and breakages. Compared to point detectors, air sampling smoke detectors recognise a fire much earlier, so that an alarm is triggered in good time and countermeasures can be initiated quickly. Another advantage of this technology is the simple maintenance of the system at a central location.
